Best weather + scenery: Spring (Mar–May) Cherry blossoms peak late March to early April in Tokyo, later further north. Mild temperatures, minimal rain until June. Downside: this is peak tourist season — expect crowds and higher hotel prices.
Best value: Winter (Dec–Feb) Cold but dry and clear — Tokyo gets very little snow. Flights and hotels are noticeably cheaper outside the New Year holiday week. Best season for hot springs and, if you head north, skiing in Hokkaido or Nagano.
Worst month to plan around: June Rainy season (tsuyu) hits most of the country. Not a downpour every day, but humid and unpredictable. If you're set on June, Hokkaido mostly skips rainy season and is a good alternative.
Most underrated: Autumn (Oct–Nov) Same appeal as spring — mild weather, comfortable walking — with fewer crowds than cherry blossom season and equally striking autumn leaves (koyo), especially in Kyoto.

Dates to actively avoid (unless that's the point)
- Golden Week (late Apr–early May): A string of national holidays — domestic travel surges, trains and hotels book out weeks ahead.
- Obon (mid-August): Major domestic travel holiday, similar crowding to Golden Week.
- New Year (Dec 29–Jan 3): Many restaurants and small shops close; trains are packed with people heading home for the holidays.
If your dates are flexible, shifting even a week outside these windows makes a noticeable difference in both price and crowd size.

Want blossoms or leaves and don't mind crowds → spring or autumn. Want low prices and don't mind cold → winter. Avoid June unless you're headed to Hokkaido. Avoid Golden Week and Obon unless you enjoy crowds.
